This is a list of Special Community Service Projects, many of which are simple enough to handle in house and are appropriate for schools, church or other service groups or individuals. For further information regarding these and other projects, contact one of our volunteer services coordinators. They will gladly assist you with the referral.
To make your volunteer connection:Agencies often need help with cleanup. Let families organize a "window washing," "spring cleaning," "van/bus washing," or "yard work" day for a nonprofit agency. arm them with cleaning supplies, and let their energy take control!
Sign up for the Community Paint-a-Thon, the 2nd Saturday of September. We supply the paint and supplies and you supply the elbow grease.
Volunteer at a summer camp for children with disabilities, leading activities like craft projects, swimming lessons, sing-alongs, etc.
Coordinate a food drive or a paper drive (paper towels, toilet tissue, etc.) or a cleaning supply drive for a shelter for abused women and children. Shelter locations are Des Plaines and Park Ridge, administrative offices Arlington Heights.
Individual or group performances or demonstrations for residents at a retirement community or a nursing home.
Collect canned goods and/or other non-perishables for a food pantry serving needy families.
Put together food baskets for needy family/families, to include holiday or anyday meal items, plus a gift certificate to Jewel or Dominicks for their meat item (or gift certificates to cover complete meal)
Make holiday or any day greeting cards or pictures for residents of a local nursing home to send to brighten their day. These could be delivered via mail or personally, or possibly combined with the following.
Sponsor a theme party with refreshments, games, prizes and entertainment for residents at a local senior and continuing care facility. Or hold activity events with the residents such as bingo, bunco, keno, bowling, and craft projects.
Collect gifts for shut-in seniors with limited financial resources, i.e., toiletries, books of stamps, stationery, paper goods (kleenex, toilet paper, etc), food certificates. Perhaps help deliver gifts to homes.
Donate party supplies, decorations, etc. for a holiday party for underpriviledged children.
Group projects for seed collecting, trail clearing, wood chipping nature centers in Schaumburg and Highland Park.
Service local seniors by providing assistance with fall & winter clean-up at their individual homes, such as window washing, leaf raking, painting, minor home repairs and snow shoveling.
Plan a food or clothing drive for the homeless. Supply and assemble personal hygiene gift bags (toothpaste, tooth brush, deoderant, soap, etc.). Purchase new socks, scarves, warm hats,gloves or mittens to be distributed at homeless shelters.
Adopt a family or child for the holiday. Provide warm clothing and a toy for children, and/or donate food gift certificates, or supply a food basket for the family.
Plan any type of party for disabled children and/or adults. Make decorations, set-up, serve, and participate in the festivities along with the residents.
Make any type of decorations for a local nursing home or home for handicapped.
Hold a donation drive for a thrift shop whose profits and go back to benefit a children's shelter or a home for severely handicapped children.
Make small crafts for residents of a home for severely retarded children (or adults) or children in a shelter.
Hold a "Change for Charity" Day to benefit The Volunteer Center (help us to serve the community--could develop a special program, with the classroom bringing in the highest donation being awarded a pizza party or ice cream party)
